Stoughton misses curling playoffs at Brier
Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton was eliminated Thursday night from further competition at the Tim Horton's Brier in Halifax after Quebec lost to Newfoundland/Labrador... Stoughton defeated Saskatchewan 7-6 in an extra end in the afternoon draw to keep his playoff hopes alive.. But Quebec had to defeat Brad Gushue of NFLD-Labrador so Stoughton could play in a tie breaker Friday. Quebec lost 8-2 in a game that lasted just seven ends.. Ontario's Glenn Howard wrapped up the round-robin at 11-0 with a 7-6 victory over Alberta. He'll face Northern Ontario's Brad Jacobs in the 1-versus-2 Page Playoff game. Newfoundland and Labrador will take on Alberta in the other playoff matchup. Meantime,   at the Manitoba Masters Mens championship at the Fort Rouge club....after the first day of action three teams are at 2-0, including Lawrie Hogg of Stonewall, Reg Malanchuk and Ron Westcott, both from Fort Rouge.. And, the Canadian women's team lost its first game Thursday at the World Junior curling championships in Switzerland.. Skip Rachel Homan lost to the host team 8-6. Homan's record is 8-1. Sweden is in second place at 7-2 In men's play, Canada's Jake Walker is in a tie for third place with Norway at 6-3. Scotland leads ...

Manitoba Winter games wrap - March 11th
Manitoba Winter games in Portage La Prairie --The semi-final games were set in Hockey on Thursday.. Winnipeg Gold plays Central while the Winnipeg Blue team faces Westman.. --Junior mens curling is into the semi-final round Winnipeg Gold team skipped by Chris Shaw defeated Norman 10-2 to finish first in Pool A.. The Wpg Gold team faces the Winnipeg Blue team in the semis.. The Blue team, skipped by Matt Dunstone  was  2-1 in pool play.. --in Junior Women's curling Winnipeg Gold defeated Norman 6-5 to finish first in Pool A with a 3-0 record. The Blue team fell to 1-2 and were third in their pool after losing to Interlake.. --In Ringette the Winnipeg teams in the Junior and Belle divisions are 3-0.. --In female Volleyball   the Winnipeg gold team heads into the semi-finals undefeated  at 3-0.. --The Winnipeg Blue team still leads the medal race with 52, including 23 gold. Interlake and Eastman both have 35 medals while the Winnipeg Gold team has collected 30 medals..

Bison MIchele Hynes wins prestigious award
Bison Michele Hynes  has been   selected as the 2009-10 CIS Women’s Basketball Sylvia Sweeney Award winner.. The fifth year guard is only the second Manitoba player to receive this CIS honour The prestigious Award is presented to a player who exhibits outstanding achievement in three areas: basketball, academics and community involvement. It is named in honour of Sylvia Sweeney, a past player at McGill, Concordia and Laurentian, who excelled both on the court and in the classroom. On the court, Hynes ranked among the Canada West leaders in scoring (11.6 ppg. -- second on the team), third in conference in assists (4.3 apg.) and minutes played (33.2 per game). She was also sixth in conference three-point field goals..

Stoughton Pulls Off Another Win
Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton has kept his playoff hopes alive at the Tim Horton's Brier in Halifax with a 7-6 extra end win over Saskatchewan Thursday afternoon.  Stoughton finishes the round robin with a 7-4 record, and now needs help from Quebec in the final round Thursday night.  If Quebec beats Newfoundland, Manitoba and Newfoundland would play a tie-breeaker for the final playoff spot Friday morning.  But if Newfoundland beats Quebec, they get the final playoff spot and Stoughton is eliminated. Ontario's Glen Howard has clinched first place.  He takes a leading 10-0 record into the final draw Thursday night, Northern Ontario is 9-2 and Alberta 8-2. The Manitoba Masters Mens Championship began Thursday at the Fort Rouge Club.  Winning their opening games were Larry Saban, Ron Westcott, Reg Malanchuk, Lawrie Hogg, Norm Magnsson, Ken Davis, Les Hooper and Bunny Small.
