A source tells The Canadian Press that the NHL and NHL Players' Association have reached a verbal agreement that will allow the Russian winger to join the New Jersey Devils. Both sides still need to sign off on the deal before today's 5 p.m. ET deadline. The exact terms of the NHL-NHLPA agreement weren't immediately available. The source confirmed that it would allow for Kovalchuk's US$100-million, 15-year contract with the Devils to be approved. The deal follows an earlier $102-million, 17-year contract that was rejected by the league because it was ruled to circumvent the salary cap.

A Winnipeg Rifles tailback set a team rushing record last weekend in the Rifles 43-36 win over the Edmonton Huskies.
Kienan LaFrance ran for 291 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns.
He also returned a missed field goal 55 yards.
The two teams meet again Sunday in Edmonton.

... 2nd game rained out
The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored seven times in the first inning, and hammered the Rockford RiverHawks 15-2 in seven innings tonight in the only game of the scheduled doubleheader that was played...
The second game was cancelled due to rain... Because the Goldeyes and RiverHawks are out of playoff contention, the game will not be made up.
Winnipeg finishes the 2010 season with a three-game series in Schaumburg against the Flyers, which begins Friday night.
