NHL PLAYOFFS - SECOND ROUND PREDICTIONS (4-4 IN THE FIRST ROUND)

Posted 4/28/2012 2:46:00 PM

My biggest fear is that nothing in the second round will come close to matching the first round series between the Flyers and Penguins.  In my opinion that was basically the Eastern Conference Final.

EAST:

New York Rangers (1) vs. Washington (7) – The Rangers got pushed a lot harder than I expected in the first round; Ottawa played them tough.  I think this could bode well for the Rangers going forward.  As the Bruins showed last year, there’s nothing wrong with a stiff test in the opening round.  As for the Capitals, I think they took advantage of a worn down Bruins team.  There’s a reason teams don’t repeat very often; Stanley Cup runs are exhausting.  Not to mention the defending champs were missing one of their top performers from last year’s playoffs, Nathan Horton.   RANGERS IN 6

Philadelphia (5) vs. New Jersey (6) – The Flyers impressed the ...

NHL Playoff Predicitons

WESTERN CONFERNCE

VANCOUVER (1) VS. LOS ANGELES (8):  I think we'll see Cory Schneider at some point in this series and he'll take over the net for the Canucks.  Less Luongo is a good thing.  VANCOUVER IN 6

ST. LOUIS (2) VS. SAN JOSE (7):  I was originally leaning towards St. Louis, but my co-workers Dave Wheeler and Cam Carson are adamant the Sharks can pull the upset.  They make a good case.  The Sharks are battle tested and have no pressure this season.  SAN JOSE IN 7

PHOENIX (3) VS. CHICAGO (6):  Phoenix is the #3 seed? WTF? How did this happen? Who the hell even plays for the Coyotes?  I'm assuming Toews will be back.  HAWKS IN 6

NASHVILLE (4) VS. DETROIT (5):  This is an impossible series to pick.  I hate betting against Detroit, but I'll put my money on Pekka Rinne.  PREDS IN 7...

A RETURN TO TOUGH HOCKEY: THANK YOU BOSTON

Posted 3/26/2012 7:49:00 AM

As I watched a 3-on-3 opening faceoff brawl between the Rangers and Devils last week, I thought to myself - thank you Boston.

I hate patting myself on the back (okay, that’s not true), but I predicted a return to rugged 80’s style hockey.  I made the prediction while the Boston Bruins were smashing their way to a Stanley Cup last year.  The big, bad Bruins boast a line-up that includes Shawn Thornton, Milan Lucic, Zdeno Chara, Gregory Campbell and Adam McQuaid.  All of whom are well versed in the pugilistic aspect of hockey.  Essentially the Bruins said “screw you” to Gary Bettman and his “new NHL”.  Oh sure, the B’s have their share of talented players and Tim Thomas had plenty to do with their run to the Cup, but at the end of the day the Bruins identity can be summed up with one word: INTIMIDATION.  If you ...

Bomber Offense Continues to be a Concern

Posted 9/7/2011 2:41:00 PM

I'm not jumping off the bandwagon, and don't go accusing me of being negative just because the Bombers had their five game winning streak snapped. The Big Blue are 7-2, they have a tremendous defense and are well coached. HOWEVER, I am concerned about their offense productivity and play-calling. This isn't the first time I've shared my displeasure about the conservative nature of the offense. Take a look back at my previous blogs and you'll notice that I wrote about it earlier in the season. Fact is, if you're not concerned about the Bomber offense, you're not watching closely enough, or reading the stats page.

TD'S SCORED: Tied for last

FIRST DOWNS: Dead last

MOST YARDS NET OFFENSE: Second last

AVERAGE YARDS/GAME: Second last

MOST YARDS NET PASSING: Dead last

AVERAGE YARDS PASSING PER GAME: Last

The most frustrating part about the offense is that they appear to have the ...

Holy Crap Winning Feels Good

SWAGGERVILLE:  I tell people all the time; sticking with your team when they are struggling is an important part of being a sports fan.  I honestly think it’s something you need to embrace, because it makes it so much more enjoyable when your team starts winning again.

This brings me to the current addition of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.  It’s fair to say Bomber fans have suffered mightily the past 3 years.  The team has not had a winning record since 2007 (19-35 in that span) and has not qualified for the playoffs the past 2 seasons.  Now the team is suddenly showing a ton of promise.  Led by a ferocious defense, the Bombers have stormed out to a 6-1 start and this city is electric with Bomber pride.  Twitter and Facebook are blowing up with Swaggerville trash talk; everywhere you go fans ...
