If you want to go see a local band but you also want to hear songs you know and can maybe sing along with, a tribute show is what you need. Luckily there are no shortage of tribute show in Winnipeg this month. Here are five.
Friday October 20th @ Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club. $10-$15.
This show was planned before the singer’s untimely passing earlier this month. What was supposed to be a birthday tribute for Tom Petty’s 67th now has significantly more meaning, which is maybe why there are two shows now. Early show at 8 pm (doors at 7) and a late show at 11:30 (doors at 10:30). Featuring members of: The Noble Thiefs, SC Mira, SubCity Dwellers, Bo Legged, Clipwing and more. Oh and they’re looking for someone who can sing like Stevie Nicks, ostensibly for a version of Stop Draggin My Heart Around, so if you’ve got a set of pipes and know how to use ’em, Lonewolf, one of the bands organizing wants to hear from you.
Bands as Bands 9: The Killers, The Smiths & Cheap Trick
October 28th @ The Good Will Social Club. $10.
They’ve been doing theses for a while now (where do you think the Tom Petty tribute idea came from?). Bands as Bands is when three already amazing local acts cover three even more amazing bands but for the first time ever, there’s a non-Winnipeg band headlining. Blessed from Vancouver will be performing as The Killers, Lev Snowe as The Smiths, and The Sorels as Cheap Trick. Doors at 9, Show at 10. Costumes and singing along are highly encouraged.
October 28th @ The Cavern $?
Hot? Check. Dingy, but like, in a good way? Yup. In a Basement? You betcha. I love shows at the Cavern, plus they sometimes have clever signs behind the bar, which I also like. This show sees Take It Or Leave It play as The Strokes at 9:30 pm, Dizzy Mystics as Soundgarden at 10:30 pm, Bullrider as Kings Of Leon at 11:30 pm and Liabilities as Arctic Monkeys at 12:30 am.
October 28th @ The Windsor $?
I listen to A LOT of Misfits as Halloween draws near, so that’s what caught my attention, but there’s actually more to this show than that. Ninjacat arranged for not only Skulls to play as the Misfits, but also Overkill as Motorhead – and let me tell you a good Lemmy costume always wins in my books – and Queens of Noise, a Runaways tribute because Joan Jett and Lita Ford are two of the rockin-est women in all of rock!
October 28th @ The Merch in Selkirk $?
We’re takin’ this one on the road. Head on up to Selly, as my friends like to call it, for Maiden Manitoba, our foremost Iron Maiden tribute band. Maiden is another band that’s great for this time of year. So much evil imagery and deliciously devilish licks. Plus, as the event page states “Can there be any place scarier than The Merch in Selkirk?” You know it’s true if you’ve ever partied out there.
