But I get it, the Fringe isn’t for everyone and as I noted yesterday, if you don’t know where to start, it can be pretty overwhelming. So I’ve put together a list of Fringe shows that you might be interested in, even if you’ve never been to a play, seen a skit or given a damn about anything performance-related. I have not seen these shows, nor have a read any preliminary reviews, i just scanned the 190 offerings at the festival this year and chose a few at random with you, the POWER 97 listener in mind. Basically what I’m saying is, that if you go and they’re not to your liking, don’t shoot the messenger.
Are you into Music?
Check out: 6 Guitars (this one I have seen and it’s pretty great, the story of 6 musicians as told through the genres and types of guitars they play), Otto & Astrid: Eurosmash (I’ve seen them before too, they’re like a very naughty German comedic version of The White Stripes), Rap Guide to Consciousness and Snake Oil (they’re from here, and they recently played with Dee Snider at the Burt, maybe you’ve heard of them?).
Do you like Beer? Trick question. Of course you do.
Indulge your Dark Side:
(Mini) Demon of Death, Blood Countess, The Death of Me, Edgar Allan, Tales of the Macabre (this one actually takes place at an historic and reportedly haunted local venue) or the horror/comedy: Mike Delamonte: The Devil
Call Me Kirk – The Ultimate Trek, Sound & Fury’s Doctor Whom, Swordplay: A Play of Swords, Your Princess Is In Another Castle
Hockey Night at the Puck & Pickle Pub or Roller Derby Saved My Soul
Just Wanna Laugh? There are so many comedy shows at the Fringe, it’s impossible to list them all but here are a bunch, and many of them are from local performers:
B-Movie Bash, Comedy is Fun Again, The DND Improv Show X, Crumbs, Hot Thespian Action: Fourplay, HUNKS 3, ImproVision: Funk Beyond the Call of Booty, Live Hunks Podcast Taping, Mennonite’s Guide to Savage Street Fighting 4: Cards Against the Rascals, No Place Like Home, Outside Joke: The Improvised Musical, Paco Erhard: Worst. German. Ever.. Panacea presents: Be A Star or Get the F__K Out, The President Bear Show, The Stand Up Comedy battle Royale
The Canada Show: The Complete History of Canada in One Hour, Help! I’m American, Horrible Histories: Rotten Rulers, Hey 90s Kids, You’re Old, Instagraham, Shark Weak: Nothing to Fear, S#!t I’m In Love With You Again, Get Me The F**K Out of Edmonton.
And if none of that does it for ya, you can always just go for the beer gardens and the music. See you at the Cube!
