The Red Hot Chili Peppers are in town tonight for a sold out show. They’re touring their 11th (!) studio album The Getaway and they’ve got two opening acts: Irontom and Jack Irons.
If you’re thinking whotheheck? You’re not alone. So I did some research for you.
Let’s start with Jack Irons. Does his name sound familiar? It should. He’s a drummer and founding member of the Chili Peppers. He’s also played with Pearl Jam (most notably on the Mirror Ball album with Neil Young!) and The Wallflowers and worked with legends like the late great Joe Strummer. He’s been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice once with the Peppers in 2012 and this past year with Pearl Jam.
Here’s a video of Irons performing a Pink Floyd song with Eddie Vedder from earlier this year.
Irontom are a five-piece rock outfit from California. Their guitar player Zach Irons is, you guessed it, Jack Irons’ son. They have two EPs and two full length albums. Partners is likely what you’ll be hearing a lot of tonight. Check out Brain Go and Be Bold Like Elijah to get a feel for their style. Personally, they kind of remind me of Hot Hot Heat meets Arctic Monkeys. But Charlie Sheen, who appeared in their very first music video described them thusly: “It’s like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles had a baby, and it was raised by wolves”.
Here’s that video:
After the tour with ol’ Dad and the Chili Peppers wraps Irontom will be hitting the road with some other Power 97 artist like Arkells (Chicago, June 9), The Revivalists (Philadelphia, June 18) & AWOLNATION (a couple dates in July).
So now you know.
No word yet on set times, but if I find out I’ll let you know.
