My DVR is set! 8pm tonight. Twenty-five years later Twin Peaks returns for season three.
Episodes 1 and 2 are running back to back on Showtime and The Movie Network tonight and there are plenty of ways to watch online.
I remember watching the show when I was a kid and not really understanding what all the fuss was about. Then when I re-watched it in my 20s, on rented DVDs from Movie Village I understood why it wasn’t exactly kid- or prime-time friendly viewing. The show’s mixture of drama, suspense, mystery and the supernatural made it ahead of its time. It also laid the groundwork for modern “dead girl” shows like Pretty Little Liars and 13 Reasons Why.
If you’ve never seen the show or just want a refresher, because there was a lot going on in the show’s short two-season run. Here you go:
And to get you set for the show’s return here are a pair of teaser trailers.
Here are a few things to know before you settle in to watch. Just about every original (living) cast member is returning with one noticeable omission: Lara Flynn Boyle who played Donna Hayward, Laura Palmer’s best friend.
Joining the cast are also a slew of new and well-known faces including Naomi Watts, Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth (awesome!), Monica Bellucci, Amanda Seyfried, Michael Cera, Jim Belushi and Trent freakin’ Reznor! (This won’t be the first time Reznor and Lynch have worked together, check out the soundtrack to Lost Highway which features one of my favourite Nine Inch Nails songs ever – video below.)
Here are the cryptic one-line episode descriptions:
Part 1: My log has a message for you.
Part 2: The stars turn and a time presents itself.
Part 3: Call for help.
Part 4: …brings back some memories.
Part 5: Case files.
Part 6: Don’t die.
Part 7: There’s a body all right.
Part 8: Gotta light?
And if that’s not enough David Lynch for you, check out the documentary playing at Cinematheque this week The Art Life.
