Two Manitoba musicians have done something no Canadian before them has managed to. They recently won the International Songwriting Competition. To give you an idea of what a big deal this is, their song The Sound was chosen from 16,000 submissions from 137 countries!
Matt Epp & Faouzia, a 16 year-old singer from Carman MB, met through the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s mentorship program last year. They will share the $25,000 US grand prize and nine days of recording time at a Nashville studio. Faouzia hopes to record her first EP this year with her share of the prize winnings.
Here’s the song. Grab a tissue. It may tug at your heartstrings.
The contest has been around for 16 years and these two are the first Canadians to win. Previous winners have included Vance Joy, Gotye & Kimbra and Bastille.
Congrats kids! I can’t wait to hear what’s next!
