I don’t know why but I’ve always been fascinated by the names given to colours. My mind was blown when I learned that a) colour perception varies greatly from culture to culture, b) language can shape how we perceive colour & c) different cultures assign different meanings to colours. But that’s getting pretty deep into geekery, even for me.
Last week Crayola announced that they are retiring a colour from their 24 box set and will be replacing it with an as-yet unnamed shade of blue.
See ya Dandelion. Thanks for the memories!
Sadly, yellow is already underrepresented in the box and in my opinion we have more than enough blues, but hey, what do I know?
I’ve often joked that my dream job might just be coming up with names of colours for nailpolish or paint companies. Here’s my chance!
And now here’s a classic Sesame Street video of how crayons are made that I think of every time I see a crayon.
