Usually when you see a symphonic cover of a band or a song that you know and love, it sounds cool and it’s neat….but there’s a bit of novelty to it right? Most of the time the covers just make you want to hear the original version again.
Being a massive TOOL fan, those were the initial thoughts I had when I came across this 40 piece ensemble doing their interpretation of ‘Shism’ from 2001’s Lateralus. Forget about those silly ideas, this is phenomenal.
It conveys the perfect amount of emotion, the dynamics are sprawling, and they managed to somehow add their own flavour to it, while staying true to the original vision of the song. What an impressive piece of music!! If you skipped through different sections of it, I suggest you at least go back and listen from the 6:50 mark of the video through to the end. I’ve heard it about 5 times today alone, and the hair stands on the back of my neck every single time.
