1991 was probably the best year for massive albums that would come to stand the test of time. We had Metallica’s black album, Pearl Jam’s Ten, Nirvana’s Nevermind…honestly the list is long, so I can’t go over every single one right now.
But this weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the album that is widely regarded as the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ best:
Although it’s not my personal favourite (that honour goes to One Hot Minute), Blood Sugar Sex Magik is a masterpiece that even to this day gets regular rotation on my home stereo. So in order to celebrate the album’s birthday, let’s go back and enjoy some of those deeper cuts that don’t get played on the radio all that often.
The album opener, what an introduction!!
Every great album has flow, and if it truly is a standout record, the second song is just as important as the first.
The title track gets a little bit psychedelic, and as much as I love their funk...it's when they go into this space that makes me the most happy.
The Chili Peppers are at their best when they've got swagger on, and this one is DRIPPING with swagger.
Honestly the whole album is a beautiful piece of art, so at some point this weekend, do yourself a favour and crank it loud.
