A study published in the Lancet Journal on Thursday suggests that sitting down for extended periods of time is as bad for your health as smoking.
The report refers to people sitting down for hours on end either at home or at work.
Fitness experts say one solution is for people to get up once every hour and get into a planking position.
Some companies have also started to incorporate standing style desks in the workplace, including Bold Commerce and Safe Work Manitoba.
Experts also recommend getting up and talking to your co-worker rather than emailing them, or to take a phone call on your cell phone which enables you to walk around, rather than your desk phone.
