It was one last chance to impress for many looking to crack the Winnipeg Blue Bombers roster. The final pre-season test ended in a 18-14 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.
Ottawa had the jump early and went out to a 17-3 lead in the first half, reduced to 17-6 by Winnipeg before the break. Sergio Castillo completed both field goal attempts for Winnipeg, including a 47-yard conversion.
Drew Willy played the entire first half behind centre for the Bombers and threw for 87 yards on 11 completions.
On the other side Henry Burris started for Ottawa and completed 13 of 21 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown before exiting late in the first half.
Matt Nichols took over in the third quarter and ended off a drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Quincy McDuffie for Winnipeg’s only touchdown. The ensuing extra point was blocked by Ottawa.
Winnipeg would get within a field goal at 17-14, before a late single by Ottawa rounded out the scoring.
The Bombers head home with the staff tasked with trimming the roster before opening day. Winnipeg hosts Montreal on June 24th in the season opener. 680 CJOB will have all the action during the 2016 Winnipeg Blue Bombers season.
