City hall is preparing to spend millions on new cycling infrastructure in the city and one Counsellor is calling for some safety reforms.
Next week, Coun. Russ Wyatt (Transcona) will request a community committee to ask some city staff to study a mandatory helmet rule for all cyclists, along with bringing in rules for safety gear, like bells and lights.
He says you need a horn and lights on your car, why shouldn’t you need the same on a bicycle?
The province introduced legislation in 2013 that says everyone under 18 must wear helmets, but this could have everyone, no matter what their age, wearing helmets. Makes sense to me.
Some counsellors say it may discourage people from biking if they have to license their bike, etc. But it seems logical that they do, no?
