It’s a very rare occurrence when a goalie is awarded a goal. On Friday, Lethbridge Hurricanes Goaltender, Stuart Skinner joined an exclusive group being the 7th goalie in WHL history to score a goal.
In the NHL’s history, only 14 Goalies have been awarded goals. The first was by New York Islanders netminder, Billy Smith back in 1979-80 against the Colorado Rockies. He was awarded the goal after being the last Islander to touch the puck before making it’s way into the net. In 1987-88, Ron Hextall of the Philadelphia Flyers was the first Goaltender to shoot on net and score.
The Goaltender who has scored the most goals in the NHL is Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.
And the last time a Goaltender scored in the NHL was in 2013-14 when Phoenix Coyotes Goalie, Mike Smith fired the puck from his own crease into an empty Detroit Red Wings net with 0.1 seconds left on the clock.
