Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn’t even a month into its record-shattering theatrical run, but fans are already looking forward to this year’s voyage to the galaxy far, far away.
The next film on the Star Wars release calendar, Rogue One, was named the most anticipated movie of 2016 in a survey of moviegoers conducted by Fandango.
More than 1,000 people were surveyed during the last week of December for Fandango’s annual Hot List. Rogue One, starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Mads Mikkelsen, arrives in theaters on Dec. 16, 2016 — just shy of a year after The Force Awakens Dec. 18 debut.
“Film fans already know what they want for their 2016 holiday present, as they count down the days till Dec. 16 when the next Star Wars story opens in theaters,” says Fandango Chief Correspondent.
Dave Karger. “The new year promises plenty of action, star turns and first-time comic book adaptations to satisfy a wide range of consumers and to continue the momentum of 2015’s banner year for moviegoing.”
Coming in behind Rogue One on the survey is Pixar’s Finding Dory, which brings back the Ellen DeGeneres-voiced forgetful fish (and introduces some of her new friends). Rounding out the top five are Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the next installment in the Bourne franchise, and Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.
Other results from the survey found that Melissa McCarthy (Ghostbusters) is the year’s most anticipated actress, and Matt Damon is the most anticipated actor (for his return as Jason Bourne). Sophie Turner (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Tom Holland (Captain America: Civil War) were picked as top rising female and male stars, respectively. Wonder Woman was named most anticipated film debut of a comic book character, for Gal Gadot’s upcoming turn in Dawn of Justice.
