A blogger in Orillia, Ontario believes that Winnipeggers are disrespecting the Canadian national anthem by cheering “True North” before Winnipeg Jets games.
The blog, which is posted on TooManyMenOnTheSite.com defends Chicago Blackhawks fans cheering “Red” and the Dallas Stars fans cheering “Stars” which interupts the Star Spangled Banner as it supports the hockey team itself and takes offense to Winnipeggers cheering in support of True North Sports and Entertainment as it is a corporate entity and not the actual hockey team.
In my opinion, a city who has taken a ride on the roller coaster that is the Winnipeg Jets by experiencing the Avco Cup Championship days in the AHL, the signing of Bobby Hull, witnessing great players like Hawerchuk and Selanne, suffering through the 1980 – 81 season when the Jets only won 9 games, feeling the pain of losing their team in 1996 and then the jubilation of finally seeing an NHL franchise return 15 years later, we have the right to say thank you to those who made it happen. We have the right to join together as the 7th man and express our pride for our team and to show appreciation to a group that fought so hard to bring back the piece that was missing from this city. And we have the right to stand out as the smartest and loudest fans in the league.
