If you’ve never heard of Uber, it’s basically the future. About 175 cities across North America are using Uber, and they love it! Uber is pretty much the replacement of taxis and it’s all done through an app. You download the app and register yourself and your credit card with it. If you need a ride, you go on the app, request a ride, and the closest driver will come get you. Uber drivers are just everyday people using their own vehicles who also register through the app. Whatever driver is coming to get you, you will view their profile before hand and vice versa. When they drop you off at your destination, there’s no money to deal with you’re just charged through the app, which is easy! Plus, it’s supposed to be cheaper than a cab.
Well, the two largest cab companies in Winnipeg think Uber is bad news.
Unicity and Duffy’s Taxi have joined forces to raise public awareness about how cabs are needed and Uber is dangerous. Sure, there’s been assaults involved with Uber, but who doesn’t know someone who has been involved in a incident with a cab driver? And when it comes to handling these incidents legally, Uber is traceable. Even if you get a ride in a state of complete intoxication and something happens, it’s all traced through the app, so you know who picked you up and therefore can report them.
More and more cities are hoppin’ on the Uber train, so it seems inevitable that one day it will put cab companies out of business and be the average drunk Joe’s main form of transportation. Are you in favour of Uber?
