I’m sure you’re well aware of the weekend that occurs here in Winnipeg when is socially acceptable to have a toilet on your front curb. It’s giveaway weekend! The weekend where you can pick up other people’s things for free and do whatever your heart desires with them.
This upcoming weekend, September 12-13, you can go curb hunting and hopefully find yourself some treasures. If you’ve never participated, here’s what to do:
- Place your unwanted—but still usable— items at the curb on your front street.
- Anything on the curb must be labelled with a ‘free’ sign or sticker.
- If you have a bird bath in your front yard that you’d like to keep, maybe throw it and any other items you love in the garage for the weekend.
- If Sunday night rolls around and there’s still items on your curb, don’t leave them for the week, no one wants them…sorry! Feel free to give them to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a thrift store.
You can place really anything on the curb, except things that may carry bed bugs like mattresses, couches, etc. Toilets are OK, as long as it doesn’t have a flush volume of 13 litres or more.
If you’re going to be off hunting, don’t take anything not marked ‘free’, don’t drive on people’s lawns, and if you do happen to pick up a couch, inspect that baby for bed bugs. Happy curb hunting to you!
