You may remember Canada’s 6-2 victory over Russia at the world championship final in May. You may also remember the Russians leaving the ice before the Canadian anthem. Well, that disrespect is costing the Russian Hockey Federation some money. On Monday the federation was fined $85,000.
Apparently, the Russians thought an open gate on the rink meant they should exit. The IIHF didn’t buy that and said Ilya Kovalchuk, the Russian team captain, clearly gave a signal for the team to leave the ice.
The Russian federation said it accepted the fine, but stuck by its really dumb claim that the exit was a case of confusion rather than deliberate disrespect. Ya right. The IIHF said no way, it’s not the players’ first game, they knew the rules. Hopefully that will teach the team how to be good sports!
